1) Resume Review Meetings for Career Expo

Are you attending the Career & Volunteer Expo on Thur, 2/16? The Career Expo is a great opportunity to connect with a variety of organizations offering job and internship opportunities! Confidently showcase your strengths, skills and experience by meeting with one of our career advisors to review your resume, discuss networking strategies, and ask any other questions.

2) Politics Club meeting, Jan. 27
Join the Politics Club! The first club meeting of the spring semester is this Friday from 4-5 p.m. in Founders Hall 181. 
  
3) Youth Educational Services volunteer opportunities
Y.E.S. is excited to offer in-person, virtual and short-term volunteer opportunities this semester! Our spring volunteer opportunities include:
  • 7 student-led semester-long programs that will engage in-person at school and community sites (2-3 hour/week commitment)
  • Virtual Pen Pal Program (10-15 hour commitment)
  • Shorter-term options through the VOP program include:
    • Drop-in knitting at YES (Tuesday 12:00-12:50 starting 1/31/23)
    • Gardening with Potawot Community Food Garden Learn more
    •  Serve-a-Thon / Cesar Chavez Day of Caring (Friday, March 31st, 2023) 
Y.E.S. spring semester recruitment will be limited to the 2-week academic enrollment period. If a student wishes to participate in a semester-long Y.E.S. program, they need to register by 1/30/23 deadline. Here are some ways to learn more about Y.E.S. opportunities:

  • Tabling on the Quad - during the first 2 weeks of the semester (10am-2pm)
  
4) 7-week Student Organizing Series
California Common Cause has been training students to be organizers and activists for over a decade. We invite you to sign up for our Winter S.O.S. series, which includes seven 50-minute webinar modules. Participants will be trained on organizing and activism as well as democracy reform issues.
  • Module 1 | Find Your Power: Telling Your Story, Gerrymandering & Representation
  • Module 2 | Plan Your Campaign: Steps, Resources, Money in Politics
  • Module 3 | Plan Your Actions: Steps, Resources, Voting & Elections
  • Module 4 | Build Your Grassroots & Grasstops: Steps, Resources, Legislation & Policy
  • Module 5 | Get Your Message Out: Communications Tips & Skills, Media Reform
  • Module 6 | Lobbying: Advocacy Tips & Skills, Ethics & Accountability
  • Module 7 | A Movement Won’t Move Without Money: Fundraising & Follow the Money
The series starts the week of January 31st. You can sign up for either the Tuesday or Thursday webinar for each module. We offer a certificate for students who complete all 7 modules and graduate from our S.O.S. webinars! Learn more and apply here. 6) Asian Pacific Islander Capitol Association (APICA) seeks interns

APICA is a non-partisan, non-profit organization of legislative staffers, lobbyists, and advocates, as well as other API professionals in the Capitol Community in Sacramento. We will host a 10-week summer internship at the State Capitol in Sacramento from June 19 to August 25. The internship is for current college students, 21 years of age or older at the time of the internship, who are interested in public policy and public service. All students are welcome to apply.

The program provides participants with a $4,960 stipend, an orientation and introduction to state government, mentorship with API Capitol staff, and a substantive, meaningful, in-person work experience in a legislative office in either the California State Assembly or California State Senate.

8) Decolonizing Economics Summit positions
The Decolonizing Economics Summit team is building a remote team of successful and enthusiastic organizers to develop the virtual Decolonizing Economics Summit from April 20-22, 2023. We are looking for lead conference organizers for each of the following subcommittees:

  • Logistics Lead Organizer
  • Communications Lead Organizer

About the Summit: Anchored by the Wiyot Tribe’s Dishgamu Community Land Trust, several Cal Poly Humboldt faculty members,  Green Eco-Socialist NetworkNative Roots Network, New Economy Coalition, the US Solidarity Economy Network, and a growing network of additional partners, this 3-day virtual conference serves as a space to exchange experiences and information, strengthen alliances and networks, and to devise strategies to decenter colonial systems and implement concrete solutions to heal the land and people.
 
   
9) Humboldt County commission vacancies
Several county commissions, including the Human Rights Commission, could use younger volunteers to serve. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors establishes advisory boards, commissions, and committees to represent and make recommendations to the Supervisors on various topics. The Board appoints persons to these commissions to represent individual Board members or in an at-large (county-wide) capacity.
