1) Humboldt County Administrative Officer internship

Apply for a great part-time, paid internship with the Humboldt County Administrative Officer! This opportunity would entail working with the County Administrative team on:

  • Researching, tracking, and identifying key legislative data to inform future county ballot measures.
  • Assisting the county’s legislative team in drafting documents and reports related to ballot measure activity.
  • Supporting the county’s legislative team in presentations related to ballot measure findings.
  • Other light (clerical and research) ballot measure support duties, as assigned.

The compensation for this opportunity would be $24.39 per hour (Classification Administrative Analyst I/II). The work schedule for this opportunity can be flexible to allow time for fulfilling academic responsibilities. However, regularly scheduled hours would need to be set and the candidate would be expected to work in person at the County of Humboldt’s main administrative office located at 825 5th Street in Eureka.

2) Writing Center opens January 23 

The Humboldt Writing Studio, a program of the Learning Center, offers free writing support for Humboldt students. The Writing Studio opens in-person and online on Monday, January 23. In-person sessions are held in the Learning Center (Library 1st Floor) and online sessions are held over Zoom and email.

Trained undergraduate and graduate Writing Consultants from a range of majors--including Engineering, Biology, English, History, and Psychology--provide consultations on all types of writing projects.

We can help with:

  • Getting started on a writing project

  • Incorporating and analyzing sources

  • Organizing arguments and linking ideas

  • Using academic voice and style

  • Improving grammar and punctuation

6) Reusable Office Supply Exchange

The Reusable Office Supply Exchange (ROSE) is an on-campus source for FREE, lightly used and new office and school supplies, available to the Cal Poly Humboldt community in Nelson Hall West 216. HSU departments, and students bring in everything from binders to craft paper they no longer need, making it available to others in order to reduce the waste stream. Remember to use ROSE this semester, since the more people who participate, the more beneficial the exchange will be for everyone! Visit ROSE M-F 8:00a-5:00p.

7) Sustainability Fellowship, applications due Feb. 10
The University of New Hampshire Sustainability Fellowship pairs undergraduate students and post-baccalaureates (grad students and recent grads) from universities across the United States* with municipal, educational, corporate, and non-profit partners to work on transformative sustainability projects. Don’t think your field of study connects with sustainability? Rethink that. We define sustainability broadly – as framed by the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Each summer, Fellows undertake challenging sustainability projects that are designed to create an immediate impact, offer an extraordinary learning experience, and foster meaningful collaboration.  While working with their mentors and host organizations, Fellows are supported by their Fellowship peers as well as an active network of partner organizations, alumni, and the UNH team, as they emerge as the next generation of sustainability leaders. 8) Osprey magazine opportunities

Osprey magazine is looking for talented writers, photographers, artists, illustrators, designers, storytellers, and content creators to join the production team for the Spring 2023 semester.

Help create and publish the next issue of this award-winning magazine, named as the best student magazine in the state of California by the California College Media Association.

Osprey Magazine Production Workshop JMC 325 is now open to all students from across the university.* This is a two-unit CR/NC course that meets in Gist Hall 215 on Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-2:50pm.

To enroll in JMC 325, contact the magazine’s faculty advisor, Jessie Cretser-Hartenstein jmc70@humboldt.edu, for a permission number to add the course.

*Prerequisites will be waived for students outside of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

    

9) New Horizons in Conservation Conference
We hope you'll join us at the 2023 New Horizons in Conservation Conference, May 10-13th! The conference is organized by Dr. Dorceta E. Taylor and hosted by the Yale School of the Environment.
The New Horizons in Conservation Conference is for:
  • students and professionals interested in sustainability, conservation, and environmental justice,
  • individuals with identities underrepresented in these professions and fields of study, and
  • those committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
New Horizons is a hybrid conference. Virtual attendees can attend sessions live and watch recorded sessions asynchronously. Limited scholarships are available. This year's sessions topics include:

2023 CSU Student Research Competition

The CSU Student Research Competition is now open. Students must submit a written summary of their research or creative presentations to the Office of Research by Tuesday, January 31, 2023. If selected, students will compete at San Diego State on April 28 and 29, 2023. Sponsored Programs will pay approved travel costs for each student selected to represent Humboldt in the statewide competition. For the complete competition rules, Click Here. Capital Fellows applications due Feb. 6
Are you graduating in Spring 2023? The Capital Fellows Programs are nationally recognized public policy fellowships offering unique experiences in policy-making and development in each branch of California state government. Fellows work for 10-11 months as full-time, paid staff members in the State Assembly, State Senate, Executive Branch or the Judiciary. The fellowships are administered by the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento, and are an outstanding opportunity for college graduates to engage in public service and prepare for future careers. Fellows receive a monthly salary of $3,253; Medical, dental and vision benefits; 6 graduate units in Political Science or Public Policy and Administration from Sacramento State; and a graduate certificate in Applied Policy and Government upon completion of the fellowship.
Prospective Capital Fellows must have completed a bachelor’s degree by Sept. 1, 2023, and a demonstrated interest in public service, public policy, and California state government. Applicants may apply to one or more of the programs that meet their interests and qualifications. Recent graduates, graduate, postgraduate and mid-career applicants are welcome to apply.
