NEWS FOR POLITICS STUDENTS -- 3-8-19

  1. Assembly Ambassadors Program, first application cycle deadline March 8. [While this is application is due today, it does not look onerous and I estimate would only take about 30 minutes to complete.] Are you interested in legislative advocacy in California? Do you have strong communication skills and enjoy meeting with political leaders? The American Civil Liberties Union Assembly Ambassadors Program is recruiting volunteers to advocate for ACLU of CA legislation, develop relationships with district staff, attend and host town halls, and collect information helpful for the ACLU Center for Advocacy & Policy. Volunteers will be trained on the legislative process, lobbying, and event planning. Further details and the online application are available here.   2. Social Science Student Symposium, May 2. The CSU Social Science Research and Instructional Council (SSRIC) Social Science Student Symposium will be held May 2, 2019, at San Francisco State. All undergraduate and graduate students, from all CSU campuses and community colleges, doing research in any social science field can participate. There are no registration fees and a luncheon will be provided. The symposium is a unique opportunity for students to present research to their peers and compete for a cash award. Presentations should be approximately 12 minutes. The registration deadline is April 7. For more information and registration details, see here.
  3. CivicSpark. Are you passionate about tackling the biggest environmental and social equity challenges facing communities today while launching your social purpose career? CivicSpark, a Governor’s Initiative AmeriCorps program, is dedicated to building capacity for local governments to address community resilience issues such as climate, water, housing, and mobility. CivicSpark is looking for upcoming and recent college graduates who want to gain real-world experience and start their career in the sustainability and resilience fields.   4. Equality California Comcast Fellowship, deadline March 29. The application for Equality California Institute-Comcast Fellowship, a paid summer legislative fellowship in Sacramento, CA, from June 17-July 12, is now open. The deadline is March 29. They seek undergraduate applicants with demonstrated leadership experience, a commitment to the future of California, and a passion for LGBTQ advocacy. Fellows will receive a $3,000 stipend.   5. Register for Q-Grad. Queer grad will happen May 10 in KBR, and organizers are asking students to register on the Multicultural Center home page by March 30. See the attached flier for more information or email mcc@humboldt.edu.
