NEWS FOR POLITICS STUDENTS -- 3-29-19

  1. Sunrise fellowship, deadline April 1. Sunrise is building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the influences of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.   2. Associated Students elections, packet due April 2. The A.S. Board of Directors is the officially recognized voice of the students -- your student government. The Board strives to advocate for students in the multitude of decision-making bodies on campus and at the CSU system level, educate students on current updates and issues on campus, the CSU and in higher education and allocate Student Body fee moneys to student-centered and student-led programs on campus every year. Learn about open positions and materials needed to run for a position here. Election packet materials are due by April 2 at 2:50 p.m. to the A.S. Office.
  3. Let's Talk about the Middle East, April 4. Free film showing ("Avanti Popolo") and discussion led by Dr. Leena Dallasheh at the Richard's Goat Miniplex (401 I Street, Arcata). Thursday, April 4, 5:30 p.m. Set in the Sinai Peninsula immediate aftermath of the Six-Day War, the film follows the surreal journey of two Egyptian soldiers, lost in the Sinai desert at the end of the war, trying to make their way home, and as they encounter an Israeli patrol. Israeli General/politician Ariel Sharon opposed this film’s nomination for the Academy Awards, claiming in was “a self-destructive portrait of inept Jews.” See the Facebook event here.
  4. Public lecture on Ukraine’s Political Geography. Nick Burdine, Humboldt Geography alumnus and returned Peace Corps volunteer (Ukraine), will present “Questioning Territoriality: An Examination of Ukraine’s Political Geography” on Thursday, April 4, from 5-6 p.m. in Founders Hall 206.   5. Public lecture on international law and colonialism. As part of the Undergraduate History Conference, keynote speaker Dr. Mostafa Minawi will discuss “International Law and Colonialism in Africa at the Turn of the 20th Century: The Ottoman Case” on Friday, April 5, from 5-7 p.m. in Founders Hall 232.   6. ideaFest deadline April 5. The deadline to register for the 6th annual ideaFest is Friday, April 5. Humboldt's 2019 ideaFest will be held on Friday, May 3.   7. Job opportunities.
  8. Campus Center for Appropriate Technology. For academic year 2019-20, CCAT will be hiring for seven part-time positions, multiple internships, and four ENST course facilitators. The deadline to apply for any of these positions is April 7. Email your resume and cover letter to ccathsu@gmail.com.
  9. Cultural Centers. AACAE, LCAE, MCC, and ITEPP are currently accepting applications for student employment for the 2019-2020 academic year. If you are currently employment with the Cultural Centers, you must reapply to be considered for an interview. A list of position descriptions for each Center can be found on the CCAE website under the Employment Opportunities tab. The deadline to apply is Monday, April 1, at 11:55 p.m. Apply here. You will need to upload a resume, cover letter, and unofficial transcript, plus provide contact information of two professional references.
  10. Writing Studio. The Humboldt Writing Studio is looking for strong writers who enjoy helping others develop as writers, readers, and critical thinkers. Positions start in Fall 2019. Interviews will be held in April 2019. Applicants must have completed or plan to complete ENGL 450: Tutoring Developing Writers (2-unit course). English 450 will be offered in fall 2019 (tentatively scheduled for Mondays 3 pm - 4:50 pm). Students who took a similar course elsewhere can request equivalency.
